Pick 3 Payouts and Odds in Every US State – Straight, Box & Fireball Prize Chart (NC, FL, VA, NJ, OH…)
How Much Does Pick 3 Pay?
A $1 straight Pick 3 play pays $500 in most US states, and a $0.50 straight play pays $250. Box plays pay $160 (3-way) or $80 (6-way) on $1, and front or back pair plays pay $50.
| Bet type | Wins when | $0.50 prize | $1 prize | Odds |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Straight | all 3 digits in exact order | $250 | $500 | 1 in 1,000 |
| Box 3-way | one repeated digit, any order (e.g. 1-1-2) | $80 | $160 | 1 in 333.3 |
| Box 6-way | 3 different digits, any order (e.g. 1-2-3) | $40 | $80 | 1 in 166.7 |
| Straight/Box 3-way ($1 only) | exact order / any other order | – | $330 / $80 | 1 in 1,000 / 1 in 333.3 |
| Straight/Box 6-way ($1 only) | exact order / any other order | – | $290 / $40 | 1 in 1,000 / 1 in 166.7 |
| Front or Back Pair | first two or last two digits in exact order | $25 | $50 | 1 in 100 |
| Combo (3-way / 6-way) | any straight order of your digits; costs 3× or 6× the stake | $250 per winning order | $500 per winning order | 1 in 333.3 / 1 in 166.7 (calculated) |
The Pick 3 payout is a fixed amount per play in most states, so it does not change from draw to draw or day to day. The prize grows with the stake: where a state accepts $2 or $5 plays, a straight win pays $1,000 or $2,500 (calculated). The main exceptions are named here. Kentucky, Iowa, Missouri and Nebraska pay $600 for a $1 straight win. Ohio, Michigan, Connecticut, Rhode Island and the Tri-State game pay $166 or $167 for a 3-way box and $83 or $84 for a 6-way box. California and New Mexico pay pari-mutuel prizes that change with each draw, and the US Virgin Islands' Caribbean Lottery pays $400 for a first-prize straight. Today's winning numbers for each state are on the Pick 3 results by state page.

Daily 3 is the Pick 3 name in California, Indiana, Michigan and West Virginia. Indiana and West Virginia pay $500, $160 and $80 on $1, Michigan pays $500, $166 and $83, and California's prizes change with every draw. A Daily 3 Midday win pays the same fixed prize as an Evening win in Indiana and Michigan; only California's Midday prizes differ from draw to draw, because they are pari-mutuel. Cash 3 in Georgia, Tennessee, Arkansas and Mississippi pays the usual $500 straight and $160 or $80 box on $1.
What Is the Difference Between Straight and Box Payouts?
A straight win pays more than a box win because it needs the exact order: $500 against $80 or $160 on a $1 play in most states. A box covers several orders, so its prize is spread across them.
- Straight: a $1 straight bet on 1-2-3 pays $500 when 1-2-3 is drawn. Virginia, for example, pays $500 on a $1 Exact Order win, and every Virginia draw is on the Virginia Pick 3 results page.
- Box 6-way (any order): a $1 box bet on 1-2-3 pays $80 when any of its six orders is drawn, such as 3-1-2. A $0.50 box pays $40.
- Box 3-way (any order): a $1 box bet on 1-1-2 pays $160 when 1-1-2, 1-2-1 or 2-1-1 is drawn. A $0.50 box pays $80.
- Straight/box (50/50 in North Carolina and Virginia, Exact/Any Order in Texas): a $1 play on 1-2-3 pays $290 when drawn in exact order and $40 in any other order; on 1-1-2 it pays $330 or $80. Florida, Georgia and West Virginia publish these amounts; elsewhere they are calculated as half a straight prize plus half a box prize. Iowa pays more: $350 or $50 on a 6-way and $400 or $100 on a 3-way.
- Combo: a $6 combo on 1-2-3 holds six $1 straight plays and pays $500 when any order is drawn, because one of the six plays wins.
A Pick 3 any-order win therefore pays $80 or $160 on $1 and $40 or $80 on $0.50 in most states, and $83 or $167 in Ohio. The exact/any (straight/box) payout is the same every day in fixed-prize states, so today's exact/any prize is the amount in this list. The combo payout chart works the same way in every state that sells combos:
| Combo type | Straight orders covered | Cost at $0.50 | Cost at $1 | Pays when one order is drawn |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3-way combo (e.g. 1-1-2) | 3 | $1.50 | $3 | $250 / $500 |
| 6-way combo (e.g. 1-2-3) | 6 | $3 | $6 | $250 / $500 |
What Are the Odds of Winning Pick 3?
The odds of a Pick 3 straight win are 1 in 1,000 on every draw. Box odds are 1 in 166.7 for three different digits and 1 in 333.3 when one digit repeats; pair odds are 1 in 100.
| Bet type | Winning combinations (of 1,000) | Odds (1 in n) | Probability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Straight | 1 | 1 in 1,000 | 0.1% |
| Box 6-way | 6 | 1 in 166.7 | 0.6% |
| Box 3-way | 3 | 1 in 333.3 | 0.3% |
| Front or Back Pair | 10 | 1 in 100 | 1% |
| Triple (e.g. 7-7-7), straight only | 1 | 1 in 1,000 | 0.1% |
Standard straight bets return 50% of the money played over time – $500 paid at odds of 1 in 1,000 – and box bets return about 48%. Pick 3 lottery odds stay the same from draw to draw: past results do not change them.
How Much Does Fireball Pay on Pick 3?
Fireball pays smaller prizes than the main Pick 3 game, and each state sets its own Fireball prize chart. On a $1 play with Fireball added ($2 in total), a Fireball straight win pays $180 in North Carolina and $200 in Florida.
Fireball is an extra digit that replaces any one of the three drawn digits, creating extra winning numbers. The base play and the Fireball part are bought together, and the add-on doubles the cost.
| State | Add-on | Bet type | Prize on a $0.50 base play | Prize on a $1 base play |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| North Carolina | Fireball | Exact (straight) | $90 | $180 |
| North Carolina | Fireball | Any Order 3-way | $30 | $60 |
| North Carolina | Fireball | Any Order 6-way | $15 | $30 |
| North Carolina | Fireball | Front/Back Pair | $9 | $18 |
| Florida | Fireball | Straight | $100 | $200 |
| Florida | Fireball | Box 3-way | $34 | $68 |
| Florida | Fireball | Box 6-way | $17 | $34 |
| Florida | Fireball | Front/Back Pair | $10 | $20 |
| Virginia | Fireball | Exact Order | – | $200 |
| New Jersey | Fireball | Straight / Box 3-way / Box 6-way | – | $180 / $60 / $30 |
| Pennsylvania | Wild Ball | Straight / Box 3-way / Box 6-way | – | $200 / $72 / $36 |
| Pennsylvania | Wild Ball | Front or Back Pair / Super Straight | – | $30 / $200 |
| Connecticut | Wild Ball | Straight | – | $200 |
| Tennessee | Wild Ball | Exact Order | – | $180 |
Virginia lists its Fireball Exact Order odds as 1 in 357, and Connecticut its Wild Ball straight odds as 1 in 333. North Carolina pays several Fireball wins on one ticket, up to $540 on a $1 Exact play when a triple is involved, and pays Fireball wins in addition to any base win. South Carolina, Texas, Illinois and Mississippi also sell Fireball, Missouri and Puerto Rico Wild Ball and Indiana Superball; each lottery publishes its own chart. A Pick 3 payout with Fireball is never copied from one state to another, and Florida's full table, with every bet type, is on its Florida Pick 3 Fireball prizes section.
Why Do Some States Pay Different Pick 3 Prizes?
Pick 3 prizes differ because each state sets its own prize table. A few states pay more than $500, some pay slightly different box prizes, three pay pari-mutuel prizes, and several cap how much they will pay on one number.
Higher Fixed Prizes in Kentucky, Iowa, Missouri and Nebraska
Kentucky, Iowa, Missouri and Nebraska pay $600 for a $1 straight win and $200 or $100 for box wins. Kentucky, Iowa and Missouri also pay $60 for a $1 pair win instead of $50, as the Kentucky Pick 3 payouts table shows. Iowa's top Pick 3 prize is $3,000 on a $5 straight play.
Different Box Prizes in Ohio and Other States
Ohio pays $167 for a 3-way box and $83 for a 6-way box on $1, close to but not the same as the usual $160 and $80. The full chart, including Ohio's Back-Up bet at $583 to $667, sits under Ohio Pick 3 payouts. Michigan pays $166 and $83, Connecticut $167 and $83, and Rhode Island and the Tri-State game $166 and $84.
Pari-Mutuel Prizes in California, New Mexico and Massachusetts
California Daily 3 and New Mexico Pick 3 Plus pay pari-mutuel prizes: the amount depends on how many tickets win. A California straight prize has ranged from $541 to $774 in recent draws, and New Mexico's $500 can be lower, with a cap of $125,000 per prize tier per draw. Massachusetts' Numbers Game shares 63% of the money bet on each draw among its winners. The difference is explained in fixed vs pari-mutuel prizes.
Liability Limits in North Carolina and Other States
North Carolina stops selling a number for a draw once its total prize liability reaches the lottery's limit, so a popular number can sell out before the draw. The rule appears with the North Carolina Pick 3 payouts, and Delaware, Iowa, Rhode Island and New Mexico reserve the same right. The US Virgin Islands caps Pick 3 liability at $500,000 per bet type.
Pick 3 Payout FAQ
With the prize tables set, the last questions are about partial matches, taxes and how to check what your own ticket won.
Can you win Pick 3 with 2 numbers?
Yes, with a front pair or back pair play, which pays $50 on a $1 play in most states that sell it – $60 in Kentucky, Iowa and Missouri and $30 in Colorado. Straight and box plays need all three digits.
What is the most you can win on Pick 3?
A $1 straight play pays $500 in most states and $600 in Kentucky, Iowa, Missouri and Nebraska. States that accept larger stakes pay more – Iowa pays $3,000 on a $5 straight play. Pick 3 has fixed top prizes, not a rolling prize.
Do you win anything with 1 number on Pick 3?
No, not on straight, box or pair plays. Two exceptions exist: the Tri-State Pick 3 in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont sells a Single Digit play that pays $5 on $1 (1 in 10), and Nebraska's Combo pays $1 for one digit in its exact position.
Is the Pick 3 payout the same in every state?
No. Most states pay $500 straight, $160 or $80 box and $50 for pairs on a $1 play, but Kentucky, Iowa, Missouri and Nebraska pay $600 straight, several states pay $166–$167 and $83–$84 box, and California and New Mexico pay pari-mutuel prizes.
Are Pick 3 winnings taxed?
Yes. Lottery winnings are federally taxable, but a $500 Pick 3 prize is below the $2,000 W-2G reporting threshold and the $5,000 withholding line (IRS, 2026). State rules differ – our lottery tax calculator estimates federal and state tax for any prize.
How much is a $0.50 straight Pick 3 win?
A $0.50 straight Pick 3 win pays $250 in most states – half the $1 prize. At $0.50, a 3-way box pays $80, a 6-way box $40 and a front or back pair $25. States with $600 straight prizes publish their own $0.50 amounts.
How are Pick 3 winnings calculated?
Pick 3 prizes are fixed amounts per $1 played in most states, so the prize grows with the stake: a $2 straight win pays $1,000 where $1 pays $500 (calculated). A combo wins one straight prize for the order drawn. Bet types are explained in how to play Pick 3.
