How to Play Pick 3 in the US – Straight, Box, Combo & Fireball Explained for NC, FL, VA, NJ, SC & More

What Is Pick 3?

Pick 3 is a daily lottery game in which players pick 3 digits from 0 to 9 and win if they match the digits drawn, in the order or combination their bet type requires. Each state lottery runs its own Pick 3 game.

Pick 3 has 1,000 possible numbers, from 000 to 999. The odds of a Pick 3 straight win are 1 in 1,000. A play costs $0.50 or $1 in most states, and states draw Pick 3 one to four times a day. Prizes are fixed in most states: a $1 straight play pays $500.

The game has a different name in many states. Georgia, Tennessee, Arkansas and Mississippi call it Cash 3. California, Indiana, Michigan and West Virginia call it Daily 3. Delaware sells Play 3, Connecticut Play3, New York Numbers, Washington, D.C. DC-3 and Puerto Rico Pega 3. North Carolina names it Carolina Pick 3, and New Jersey writes Pick-3.

Pick 3 is not a multi-state game. Each lottery sets its own draws, prices and prize rules. Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont are the exception: they share one Tri-State Pick 3 draw. The game grew out of the numbers game, an illegal three-digit daily lottery run in US cities long before states sold it. New Jersey started the first legal state version, Pick-It, on May 22, 1975, and renamed it Pick-3 in 1987.

How Do You Play Pick 3? (Step by Step)

You play Pick 3 by choosing three digits, a bet type, an amount and a draw, then keeping the ticket until the result is published. The six steps below are the same in every state; only the names differ.

  1. Choose three digits from 0 to 9, such as 4-7-1. Repeated digits such as 1-1-2 or 7-7-7 are allowed. The terminal also picks digits at random on request – Virginia calls this an Easy Pick.
  2. Choose a bet type: straight, box, straight/box, combo or a pair bet, where your state offers it. The bet type decides which draws your digits win on.
  3. Choose the amount: $0.50 or $1 per play in most states. A straight/box play costs $1, and a combo costs the base amount times the number of orders.
  4. Add Fireball or your state's add-on for extra winning combinations. The add-on doubles the cost of the play.
  5. Choose the draw and the number of draws: midday, evening or night, depending on the state. A multi-draw ticket covers consecutive draws – up to 7 for each North Carolina draw, up to 7 in New Jersey and up to 7 at a Georgia retailer.
  6. Keep the ticket and check the result after the draw. The latest numbers for every state are on our Pick 3 results by state page.

Tickets are sold by licensed retailers in each state, and a few lotteries also sell plays online. Players must be 18 or older in most states; Arizona, Iowa, Louisiana and Mississippi require 21, and Nebraska 19.

Playing Pick 3 Online

Pick 3 is sold online in a few states only, through the state lottery's own player account. Online play follows the same steps as a paper ticket: digits, bet type, amount and draws.

North Carolina sells Carolina Pick 3 through Online Play. Online sales close at 2:43 PM ET for the Daytime draw and 10:58 PM ET for the Evening draw, two minutes before retail sales. North Carolina credits online wins under $600 to the player's account automatically. Georgia sells Cash 3 online with Multi-Draw for up to 6 consecutive drawings. West Virginia sells Daily 3 online. Massachusetts sells its Mass 3 game online only, to players 21 or older. In every other state, Pick 3 is bought at a licensed retailer. ThreeFour sells no tickets and links to no ticket sellers.

What Are the Pick 3 Bet Types?

Pick 3 has five common bet types: straight, box, straight/box, combo and pair bets. Each one sets whether your digits must match in exact order, in any order or only in part. Some states rename them.

A Pick 3 ticket wins when its digits match the draw the way its bet type requires. A few states add 1-Off, which also pays when digits are one away from the drawn digits.

Back Pair Back Pair last 2 digits match in exact order 2-3 wins on 0-2-3 to 9-2-3 1 in 100
Split Pair Split Pair (VA, OH, KY, CT) first and last digits match in exact order 1-x-3 wins on 1-0-3 to 1-9-3 1 in 100
1-Off 1-Off (GA), 1-OFF (KY) each digit is the drawn digit or one above or below it 1-2-3 wins a lower prize on 2-2-3 1 in 125 to 1 in 1,000 (Georgia)

Straight (Exact)

A straight bet on 1-2-3 wins only if the draw is 1-2-3. North Carolina calls it Exact, and Virginia and Texas call it Exact Order. A $1 straight play pays $500 in most states; Kentucky, Iowa, Missouri and Nebraska pay $600.

Box (Any Order): 6-Way and 3-Way

A box bet on 1-2-3 wins on any of its six orders, such as 3-2-1. A box bet on 1-1-2 has only three orders, so it is called a 3-way box and pays more than a 6-way box – $160 against $80 on a $1 play in most states. A triple such as 7-7-7 has one order only, so it is played straight, never box.

Straight/Box (50/50)

A straight/box bet splits one $1 play into a 50¢ straight and a 50¢ box. Both halves win when 1-2-3 is drawn exactly; only the box half wins when 2-3-1 is drawn. North Carolina and Virginia call it 50/50, and Texas calls it Exact/Any Order.

Combo

A combo bet buys every straight order of your digits on one ticket. The cost is the base amount times the number of orders: $6 for a $1 combo on 1-2-3 (6 orders) and $3 for a $1 combo on 1-1-2 (3 orders). The combo pays the straight prize for the order that is drawn – $500 on a $1 combo in Florida and Georgia. New Jersey calls the same bet a Wheel.

Front Pair, Back Pair and Split Pair

A front pair bet on 1-2 wins when the first two digits drawn are 1-2 in that order, and a back pair bet on 2-3 needs the last two digits. Florida pays $50 on a $1 pair play, the same as most states that sell pairs, as the Florida Pick 3 payouts table shows. North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Ohio, Kentucky and Georgia also sell pair bets. Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky and Connecticut add a split pair, which matches the first and last digits.

1-Off

A 1-Off bet wins when each digit is the drawn digit or one above or below it, in the same position. The prize falls as more digits are off. Georgia's Cash 3 1-Off odds run from 1 in 125 to 1 in 1,000, and every Georgia draw is listed on the Georgia Cash 3 results page. Kentucky added 1-OFF on July 30, 2018, with 27 chances to win on a Pick 3 play. Michigan and Indiana sell 1-Off on Daily 3.

How Does Fireball Work on Pick 3?

Fireball is an extra digit, 0 to 9, drawn after the three Pick 3 digits and used in place of any one of them to create more winning combinations. Fireball doubles the play's cost and pays lower prizes.

A draw of 1-2-3 with Fireball 7 creates three extra winning numbers:

  • 7-2-3 (Fireball replaces the first digit)
  • 1-7-3 (Fireball replaces the second digit)
  • 1-2-7 (Fireball replaces the third digit)

A straight ticket on 1-7-3 with Fireball added wins a Fireball straight prize. A box ticket on 3-7-1 with Fireball wins a Fireball box prize, because 3-7-1 is an order of 1-7-3. A ticket without Fireball wins nothing on these extra numbers.

A $1 straight play with Fireball costs $2, and a $0.50 play costs $1. Fireball is offered on Pick 3 in North Carolina, Florida, Virginia, New Jersey, South Carolina, Texas, Illinois and Mississippi. Each state sets its own Fireball prizes: North Carolina pays $180 on a $1 Fireball straight win, listed with the other North Carolina Pick 3 Fireball prizes, while Florida and Virginia pay $200. North Carolina pays Fireball wins in addition to any regular win on the same play.

Wild Ball and Other Pick 3 Add-Ons

Pennsylvania's Wild Ball works like Fireball: one extra digit replaces any drawn digit, and the play costs double. Pennsylvania added Wild Ball on September 13, 2016, and the Wild Ball digit is shown with every draw on the Pennsylvania Pick 3 results page. Connecticut, Missouri, Tennessee and Puerto Rico also use the Wild Ball name. Indiana calls its version Superball, Massachusetts Mass 3 uses Wicked Bonus, and the US Virgin Islands sells Mega Ball, which also doubles the cost. Idaho's Sum It Up! costs $1 extra per $1 play.

New Jersey's Instant Match and New York's Instant Win cost $1 extra and pay instant prizes printed on the ticket; they do not change the draw. Georgia, New York, Ohio and Kentucky offer no Fireball-type add-on on Pick 3.

How Do Pick 3 Rules Differ by State?

Pick 3 rules differ by state in the game's name, the number of daily draws, the prices, the add-on and the bet-type names. The straight odds stay 1 in 1,000 everywhere, and the table lists each state's version.

The common rules are the same in every state: three digits from 0 to 9, one result per draw, and a claim deadline set by the state lottery. Two states pay pari-mutuel prizes that change with sales: California Daily 3 and New Mexico Pick 3 Plus. North Carolina stops taking wagers on a number for a draw once its prize liability reaches the lottery's limit, and Delaware and Rhode Island also reserve the right to limit sales on a number. Minimum ages differ: 18 in most states, 21 in Arizona, Iowa, Louisiana and Mississippi, and 19 in Nebraska.

When Are Pick 3 Drawings Held?

Pick 3 drawings are held every day in most states, between midday and just before midnight ET. The earliest draw on our state pages is 12:29 PM ET (Georgia and Ohio Midday) and the latest 11:34 PM ET (Georgia Night).

Texas, Tennessee and the US Virgin Islands add a morning draw. South Carolina skips its Midday draw on Sundays, and Texas, West Virginia and Puerto Rico draw Monday to Saturday only. Ticket sales close shortly before each draw – 11 minutes before in Florida and 15 minutes before the North Carolina Day draw. Each state page lists its exact draw and cut-off times, and the Pick 3 & Pick 4 draw times by state compare them side by side.

How Do You Check and Claim a Pick 3 Prize?

You check a Pick 3 ticket against the published result, sign it, and claim the prize from your state lottery before its deadline, which runs from 90 days to one year depending on the state. Retailers pay small prizes.

Checking a Pick 3 Ticket

A Pick 3 ticket is checked against the result for its own draw date and draw. Players can check your Pick 3 numbers against every draw in a date range, from the latest draw to the past year, for exact-order, any-order and pair matches, with Fireball matches listed separately. A multi-draw ticket is checked against each draw it covers.

Claiming a Pick 3 Prize and Paying Tax

  1. Sign the back of the ticket.
  2. Claim smaller prizes at a lottery retailer and larger ones from the state lottery. The retailer limit is $599 or $600 in most states, $500 in South Carolina and $2,500 in Pennsylvania.
  3. Claim before your state's deadline: 180 days in North Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Virginia, South Carolina, Ohio and Kentucky, and one year in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.

Pick 3 winnings are taxable income. A $500 Pick 3 win is below the 2026 federal W-2G reporting threshold of $2,000, but it still belongs on your federal tax return, and state rules differ. The lottery tax calculator estimates the tax on a prize in each state.

Pick 3 FAQ

With the rules clear, the remaining questions are quick yes-or-no answers about winning combinations, buying and claiming.

Do you have to get all 3 numbers to win Pick 3?

No. Straight and box plays need all three digits, but a front pair or back pair play wins on two digits in exact order – $50 on a $1 play in most states that sell pairs. Georgia and Kentucky also sell 1-Off. Prizes for every state are in Pick 3 payouts by state.

Can you play Pick 3 online?

Yes, in some states. North Carolina, Georgia and West Virginia sell Pick 3 plays online through the state lottery's player account, and Massachusetts sells Mass 3 online only. Everywhere else, Pick 3 is sold at licensed retailers. ThreeFour publishes results only and sells no tickets.

Does the order of the numbers matter in Pick 3?

Yes, for a straight play, which wins only when the digits are drawn in your exact order. No, for a box play, which wins in any order but pays less – $80 instead of $500 on a $1 6-way box in most states.

How much is a Pick 3 ticket?

A Pick 3 play costs $0.50 or $1 in most states, and a straight/box (50/50) play costs $1. A combo costs the base amount times the number of orders, Fireball doubles the price, and New Jersey and Kentucky allow plays up to $5.

What happens if the same digit is drawn twice?

A number such as 1-1-2 has only three orders, so a box play on it is a 3-way box: the odds are 1 in 333.3 and the prize is higher than a 6-way box. A triple such as 7-7-7 is played straight only.

Can you play Pick 3 every day?

Yes. Most states draw Pick 3 seven days a week, one to four times a day. A few skip draws: South Carolina has no Midday draw on Sundays, and Texas, West Virginia and Puerto Rico draw Monday to Saturday only.

How long do you have to claim a Pick 3 prize?

Pick 3 claim deadlines run from 90 days to one year from the draw: 180 days in North Carolina, Florida and Georgia, one year in New Jersey and New York, and 90 days in Iowa. The lottery ticket expiration checker shows your exact last day.
