How to Play Pick 4 in the US – Straight, Box, Combo & Fireball Explained for NC, FL, VA, NJ, NY & More

What Is Pick 4?

Pick 4 is a daily lottery game in which players choose four digits from 0 to 9 and win when they match the four digits drawn, either in exact order or in any order. Every state lottery runs its own version.

There are 10,000 possible Pick 4 numbers, from 0000 to 9999, so a straight play has odds of 1 in 10,000. Most states charge $0.50 or $1 a play and pay $5,000 for a $1 straight win. The prize is fixed in most states; California Daily 4, New Mexico Pick 4 Plus and the Massachusetts Numbers Game pay pari-mutuel prizes that move with sales.

Local names differ. New York calls the game Win 4. Georgia, Tennessee, Arkansas and Mississippi sell Cash 4. Texas, California, Indiana, Michigan and West Virginia sell Daily 4. Delaware sells Play 4, Connecticut Play4, Washington, D.C. DC-4 and Puerto Rico Pega 4. North Carolina calls it Carolina Pick 4 and New Jersey Pick-4.

Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont share a single Tri-State Pick 4 draw; every other state draws its own. Not every lottery sells a four-digit game: Minnesota, Kansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Colorado and Washington offer Pick 3 only, while Oregon offers Pick 4 without a Pick 3. New Jersey ran one of the first state Pick 4 games, starting weekly draws on July 9, 1977.

How Do You Play Pick 4? (Step by Step)

You play Pick 4 by picking four digits, choosing how they must match, setting your stake and selecting a draw. The ticket is then checked against that draw's result. The steps are the same in every state.

  1. Pick four digits from 0 to 9. Repeats are allowed, such as 1-1-2-3 or 7-7-7-7, and the retailer's terminal will also print a random set on request.
  2. Decide how the digits must match: straight (exact order), box (any order), straight/box, combo or a pair bet where your state sells one.
  3. Set the stake: $0.50 or $1 a play in most states, with straight/box at $1. New Jersey and Kentucky accept up to $5 a play, Connecticut up to $5 and Indiana up to $10.
  4. Add Fireball, Wild Ball or your state's add-on if wanted. The stake doubles.
  5. Select the draw – midday, evening or night – and, where offered, several draws in a row on one ticket. North Carolina sells up to 7 consecutive draws for each draw time.
  6. Keep the ticket safe until the draw and compare it with the result on your state's page, which our Pick 4 results by state page lists in one place.

Licensed retailers sell Pick 4 tickets in every state that has the game. Players must be at least 18 in most states, 19 in Nebraska and 21 in Arizona, Iowa, Louisiana and Mississippi.

Playing Pick 4 Online

Pick 4 is sold online only where the state lottery runs its own online sales. North Carolina sells Carolina Pick 4 through Online Play, Georgia sells Cash 4 online, and Massachusetts sells Mass 4 online only.

An online Pick 4 play uses the same choices as a paper ticket: four digits, a bet type, a stake and the draws. North Carolina's online sales close at 2:43 PM ET for the Daytime draw and 10:58 PM ET for the Evening draw. Georgia's online Multi-Draw covers up to 6 consecutive drawings. Massachusetts limits Mass 4 to players 21 and older. Every other state sells Pick 4 through licensed retailers. ThreeFour sells no tickets.

What Are the Pick 4 Bet Types?

Pick 4 offers straight, box, straight/box, combo and pair bets, and box bets come in four sizes – 24-way, 12-way, 6-way and 4-way – set by how many digits repeat. Georgia and Kentucky add a 1-Off bet.

A Pick 4 ticket wins when its four digits line up with the draw in the way its bet type demands. The table shows each rule with a worked example.

Front / Mid / Back Pair Mid Pair (FL, SC, TX), Middle Pair (NM, Tri-State) first two, middle two or last two digits in exact order 1-2 wins a front pair on any draw starting 1-2 1 in 100
1-Off 1-Off (GA), 1-OFF (KY) each digit equal to, or one away from, the drawn digit in its position 1-2-3-4 wins a lower prize on 1-2-3-5 set by each state

Straight (Exact Order)

A straight bet on 5-0-2-9 wins only on 5-0-2-9. Virginia, Mississippi and Idaho call it Exact Order, and North Carolina calls it Exact. A $1 straight play pays $5,000 in most states; Iowa and Missouri pay $6,000.

Box: 24-Way, 12-Way, 6-Way and 4-Way

A box bet wins when all four digits appear in any order, and its size depends on the repeats in your number. Four different digits give 24 orders, one pair 12, two pairs 6 and three of a kind 4. Fewer orders mean longer odds and a bigger prize: $200 for a 24-way box and $1,200 for a 4-way box on a $1 play in most states. A number with four identical digits, such as 8-8-8-8, is played straight only.

Straight/Box (50/50)

A straight/box bet on 1-2-3-4 costs $1 and is really two 50¢ bets on the same number: one straight, one box. North Carolina and Virginia sell it as 50/50, and Michigan calls it 2-Way.

Combo (Wheel)

A combo bet covers every exact order of your digits, so a 24-way combo costs 24 times the base stake and a 4-way combo four times. A $1 combo costs $4 to $24 in Georgia, Florida and New York. New Jersey sells it as a Wheel and New York as a Combination.

Pair Bets: Front, Mid and Back

A pair bet needs only two digits in exact order: the first two for a front pair, the last two for a back pair, and the middle two for a mid pair in states such as Florida, South Carolina and Texas. New Jersey pays $50 on a $1 Pick-4 pair bet, as listed with the other New Jersey Pick 4 payouts. Connecticut adds a split pair on Play4. Georgia, Virginia, Kentucky, Delaware and Louisiana sell no pair bets on their four-digit games.

1-Off (Georgia and Kentucky)

A 1-Off bet pays a smaller prize when your digits are each the same as, or one away from, the digits drawn in the same positions. Kentucky added 1-OFF to Pick 4 on July 30, 2018, and every Kentucky draw is posted on the Kentucky Pick 4 results page. Georgia offers 1-Off on Cash 4, and Michigan and Indiana offer it on Daily 4.

How Does Fireball Work on Pick 4?

Fireball on Pick 4 is a fifth digit drawn after the main four and used in place of any one of them, creating four extra numbers that win Fireball prizes. Fireball costs the same again as the base play.

With a draw of 1-2-3-4 and Fireball 7, the extra winning numbers are:

  • 7-2-3-4
  • 1-7-3-4
  • 1-2-7-4
  • 1-2-3-7

A straight ticket on 1-2-7-4 with Fireball wins a Fireball straight prize, and a box ticket on 7-4-2-1 wins a Fireball box prize. New Jersey pays $1,350 on a $1 Pick-4 Fireball straight win and $675 on $0.50; other states set their own amounts. Fireball is sold on Pick 4 in North Carolina, Florida, Virginia, New Jersey, South Carolina, Texas, Illinois and Mississippi, and South Carolina added it on May 3, 2021, as shown with each draw on the South Carolina Pick 4 results page.

Wild Ball and Other Pick 4 Add-Ons

Pennsylvania's version is Wild Ball, added to Pick 4 on September 13, 2016: one extra digit that replaces any drawn digit, at twice the cost. The Wild Ball digit appears beside each draw on the Pennsylvania Pick 4 results page. Connecticut, Missouri, Tennessee and Puerto Rico also use Wild Ball, Indiana uses Superball, Idaho sells Sum It Up!, the US Virgin Islands sells Mega Ball and Massachusetts Mass 4 has Wicked Bonus.

New Jersey's Instant Match and Rhode Island's Instant Match cost $1 extra and pay instant prizes up to $500 without changing the draw. Georgia, New York, Ohio and Kentucky sell Pick 4 without an add-on.

How Do Pick 4 Rules Differ by State?

Pick 4 rules change from state to state in the game name, draws per day, stakes, add-on and the names of each bet. What stays the same is the 1 in 10,000 straight odds, as the table shows.

Some lotteries limit how much can be bet on one number: North Carolina stops taking wagers on a number for a draw once its prize liability reaches the lottery's limit, and Rhode Island and Iowa reserve the same right. The US Virgin Islands caps Pick 4 liability at $1,000,000 per bet type. Box prizes also vary: Delaware, Michigan, Connecticut and Tri-State pay $208 to $1,250 on box plays instead of $200 to $1,200, and Iowa and Missouri pay $250 to $1,500.

When Are Pick 4 Drawings Held?

Pick 4 is drawn one to four times a day depending on the state. On our state pages, draws run from 12:29 PM ET (Georgia Cash 4 and Ohio Pick 4 Midday) to 11:34 PM ET (Georgia Cash 4 Night).

Oregon draws Pick 4 four times every day, and Texas draws Daily 4 four times Monday to Saturday. The US Virgin Islands also holds four Pick 4 draws a day. Ohio's Saturday evening draw takes place during the Cash Explosion broadcast, and South Carolina holds no Midday draw on Sundays. Exact times and sales cut-offs sit on each state page, and the Pick 3 & Pick 4 draw times by state put them side by side.

How Do You Check and Claim a Pick 4 Prize?

A winning Pick 4 ticket is checked against its draw, signed and claimed from the state lottery before the deadline, which is 90 days to one year from the draw. A $5,000 straight win is too large for most retailers to pay.

Checking a Pick 4 Ticket

Compare the four digits on your ticket with the result for the same date and draw. To test one number against many draws at once, check your Pick 4 numbers with our checker, which flags exact-order, any-order (24-, 12-, 6- or 4-way) and pair matches over a date range of up to one year and lists Fireball matches separately.

Claiming a Pick 4 Prize and Paying Tax

Retailers pay only up to their state's limit – $599 in Florida and New York, under $600 in North Carolina, $500 in South Carolina – so a $5,000 straight win is claimed from the lottery, by mail or at a claim office. Pennsylvania retailers pay up to $2,500. Deadlines run 180 days in North Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Virginia, South Carolina, Ohio and Kentucky, and one year in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.

A $5,000 win is above the 2026 federal W-2G reporting threshold of $2,000. The 24% federal withholding applies only when winnings minus the stake exceed $5,000, so a $1 straight win ($4,999 after the stake) is not withheld while a $2 straight win is. The Lottery Tax & Payout Calculator estimates the federal and state tax on a Pick 4 prize.

Pick 4 FAQ

Once the rules are clear, a few short questions remain about partial matches, buying tickets and claim deadlines.

Can you win Pick 4 with 3 numbers?

No, not on a straight, box or pair play: straight and box need all four digits and pair plays need two. A few states sell separate three-digit plays on the Pick 4 draw, such as DC-4 Front Three and Oregon's First 3. See Pick 4 payouts by state.

Can you play Pick 4 online?

Yes, where the state lottery sells online plays. North Carolina and Georgia offer Pick 4 online, and Massachusetts sells its Mass 4 game online only, to players 21 and older. Other states sell Pick 4 at licensed retailers; ThreeFour sells no tickets.

Does the order of the numbers matter in Pick 4?

Yes, if you play straight: 1-2-3-4 wins only when 1-2-3-4 is drawn. No, if you play box: any order wins, and the prize depends on how many orders your four digits make – 24, 12, 6 or 4.

How much is a Pick 4 ticket?

Most states charge $0.50 or $1 per Pick 4 play, with straight/box and 50/50 plays at $1. A combo costs the stake times its orders – up to $24 at $1 – and adding Fireball doubles the stake. New Jersey and Kentucky accept up to $5.

What happens if a digit repeats in Pick 4?

Repeats shrink the number of orders: one pair, such as 1-1-2-3, makes a 12-way box; two pairs make a 6-way box; three of a kind makes a 4-way box with the longest box odds, 1 in 2,500. Four identical digits are played straight only.

Can you play Pick 4 every day?

Yes. Most states draw Pick 4 daily, and some draw it several times a day – Oregon four times every day. Texas Daily 4 and West Virginia Daily 4 are drawn Monday to Saturday, and South Carolina has no Sunday Midday draw.

How long do you have to claim a Pick 4 prize?

The deadline depends on the state, from 90 days to one year: 180 days in Georgia, Ohio and Kentucky, one year in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania, and 90 days in Iowa and New Mexico. Enter your draw date in our ticket expiry checker to see your last day.
