Return = average prize paid back per $1 played, from the state's fixed prizes and the exact odds. It is about 50% for most bets: over time players get back about half of what they spend. Each draw is random.
How to use the payout calculator
- Choose your state game (Pick 3, Pick 4, Cash 3, Numbers, Win 4 and the rest).
- Type your digits, choose the play type and the wager per play. Add Fireball, Wild Ball or another add-on where your state offers it.
- Read the ticket cost, how many ways the number wins, the prize for each winning outcome, the odds and the average return. Use "tax?" to see what you would keep.
How it works and sources
Ways are pure maths: a Pick 3 number with three different digits has 6 arrangements, one repeated digit 3; a Pick 4 number has 24, 12 (one pair), 6 (two pairs) or 4 (three of a kind). A combo plays every arrangement as its own straight bet, so it costs ways × wager. Straight/Box splits the stake in half: half straight, half box.
Prizes come from each state lottery's published prize chart, collected in our fact files with a confidence flag (state lottery source, other source or unconfirmed). Add-on prizes are shown only where we have that state's own figures – they are never copied from another state. Pari-mutuel games (California Daily 3 and Daily 4, New Mexico, The Numbers Game in Massachusetts) show "prize varies – check the state lottery".
Prizes for a $0.50 play use the state's published half prizes; other wagers scale the $1 prize. Odds are exact (1 in 1,000 for a Pick 3 straight, 1 in 10,000 for Pick 4). This is arithmetic only – no system can change the odds.
Verify with your state lottery before claiming.
Example: a $1 Any Order play on 1-1-2 in North Carolina Pick 3 costs $1 and pays $160 if 1-1-2, 1-2-1 or 2-1-1 is drawn. Prize source: North Carolina Pick 3 payouts.
What Does the Pick 3 & Pick 4 Payout Calculator Show?
The Pick 3 & Pick 4 payout calculator shows what a play costs and what it pays in your state: the ticket cost, the number of winning ways, the prize for each winning outcome, the odds and the average return.
The calculator works as a Pick 3 calculator, a Pick 4 calculator and a Pick 5 calculator for 91 daily-digit games in 43 US jurisdictions, from 2-digit Pick 2 to 5-digit Pick 5. You choose the state game, type your digits, choose the play type and the wager, and add Fireball, Wild Ball or another add-on where the state offers it. Each play type keeps the state's own name: Exact and Any Order in North Carolina, Straight and Box in Florida, Wheel in New Jersey, Combination in New York.
A combination finder under the form lists every arrangement of your own digits, with the box type, the combo cost and the odds. A play-type panel shows a winning and a losing example for each bet on ticket 1-2-3. The odds table lists every play type of the chosen game with its cost, prize, odds and average return.
How Does the Pick 3 & Pick 4 Payout Calculator Work Out Cost and Prize?
The payout calculator multiplies the state's prize for your bet type by your wager: a $1 Pick 3 straight play pays $500 in most states, so a $0.50 play pays $250, and a $1 Pick 4 straight play pays $5,000.
- Ways: the calculator counts how many arrangements of your digits win. A Pick 3 number with three different digits has 6, a repeated digit gives 3, and a Pick 4 number has 24, 12, 6 or 4.
- Cost: a straight, box, straight/box or pair play costs the wager. A combo costs the wager times the number of ways. An add-on such as Fireball doubles the cost.
- Prize: the prize comes from the state's published prize table. A $0.50 play uses the state's published half prize; other wagers scale the $1 prize.
- Odds and return: the odds are exact – 1 in 1,000 for a Pick 3 straight and 1 in 10,000 for a Pick 4 straight. The return is the average prize paid back per $1 played: 50% on a straight bet.
Pick 3 bet winnings are calculated the same way for every bet type: prize per $1 times the wager. A $1 Pick 3 box on 1-2-3 pays $80 in most states and a $1 box on 1-1-2 pays $160. A Pick 3 50/50 or straight/box play splits the stake in half: half plays straight, half plays box. On a $1 North Carolina 50/50 play on three different digits, the exact order pays $290 and any other order pays $40.
Pick 4 bet winnings follow the same rule. A $1 Pick 4 box pays $200 on 24 ways, $400 on 12 ways, $800 on 6 ways and $1,200 on 4 ways in most states. A $1 Pick 4 50/50 play pays half the straight prize plus half the box prize when the exact order is drawn. Pick 5 works the same way: a $1 Florida Pick 5 straight play pays $50,000, so a $0.50 play pays $25,000.
The calculator does arithmetic on published prizes only; each draw is random and no bet type changes the odds. After the prize, check the ticket with the Pick 3 & Pick 4 number checker.
How Many Ways Can Your Pick 3 or Pick 4 Numbers Win?
A Pick 3 number with three different digits wins box in 6 ways, one with a repeated digit in 3 ways, and a triple wins only straight; Pick 4 numbers win box in 24, 12, 6 or 4 ways.
| Game | Digit pattern | Example | Box ways | Box odds | $1 combo cost | $1 box prize (most states) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pick 3 | three different digits | 1-2-3 | 6 | 1 in 166.7 | $6 | $80 |
| Pick 3 | one repeated digit | 1-1-2 | 3 | 1 in 333.3 | $3 | $160 |
| Pick 3 | triple | 7-7-7 | 1 (straight only) | – | – | – |
| Pick 4 | four different digits | 1-2-3-4 | 24 | 1 in 416.7 | $24 | $200 |
| Pick 4 | one pair | 1-1-2-3 | 12 | 1 in 833.3 | $12 | $400 |
| Pick 4 | two pairs | 1-1-2-2 | 6 | 1 in 1,666.7 | $6 | $800 |
| Pick 4 | three of a kind | 1-1-1-2 | 4 | 1 in 2,500 | $4 | $1,200 |
| Pick 4 | quad | 7-7-7-7 | 1 (straight only) | – | – | – |
A Pick 3 combo plays every arrangement of your digits as its own straight bet. A $1 combo on 1-2-3 costs $6 and pays the $500 straight prize when any of the 6 arrangements is drawn; a combo on 1-1-2 costs $3. A Pick 4 24-way box pays $200 on a $1 play, a 12-way box $400 and a 4-way box $1,200; a $1 Pick 4 combo costs $24, $12, $6 or $4 in the same order.

Add-on prizes appear only where a state publishes its own figures; no value is copied from another state.
Pick 3 & Pick 4 Payout Calculator FAQ
These answers cover the cost and prize questions the calculator raises most often.
How do you calculate Pick 3 winnings?
Multiply your state's prize for the bet type by your wager: a $1 straight Pick 3 play pays $500 in most states, so a $0.50 play pays $250. Box, pair and combo prizes come from the same table – compare states in Pick 3 payouts by state.
How do I calculate Pick 4 bet winnings?
Multiply the state's Pick 4 prize for your bet type by your wager. A $1 Pick 4 straight play pays $5,000 in most states and a $0.50 play pays $2,500. A $1 box pays $200 to $1,200, depending on how many ways your number wins.
How much does a Pick 3 combo cost?
A combo costs your wager times the number of arrangements: $6 for a $1 combo on three different digits and $3 for one with a repeated digit. Each arrangement is a straight play, so the ticket wins the straight prize if any arrangement is drawn.
Does Fireball double the cost of a Pick 3 or Pick 4 play?
Yes. Fireball doubles the cost of each play in states that offer it – a $1 play becomes $2 – and Fireball wins pay lower prizes than the main draw. The calculator shows Fireball prizes only for states that publish them.
Does the payout calculator include tax?
No. The payout calculator shows the prize before tax. In 2026 a prize of $2,000 or more (and at least 300 times the wager) gets a Form W-2G, and federal tax is withheld above $5,000 after the wager – the lottery tax calculator estimates what you keep.
